Introduction

The Great Rann of Kutch – one of the top birding sites in India is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat. With the Little Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands on its southern edge, it is situated in the district of Kutch spanning around 30,000 square kilometers between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River.

Along with over 200 species of resident birds, the Great Rann of Kutch is an important stopover for migratory birds which makes it one of the top birding sites in India. Some of key species seen here are Marshall’s Iora, Grey Hypocolius, Spotted flycatcher, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Shrikes, White-naped Tit, Stoliczka’s Bushchat, Sykes’s Nightjar, Tawny Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard, Laggar Falcon, White-bellied Minivet, Short-eared Owl, Indian Eagle Owl, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Merlin, MacQueen’s Bustards, Great Indian Bustards, Common Cranes, Chestnut-bellied & Painted Sandgrouse, Pelicans, and of-course the majestic Flamingos.

Join us in exploring these marshes, grasslands and semi-deserted areas buzzing with a variety of avian species, especially targeting the passage migrants along with the key resident species.

Itinerary

Day 1: Birding at tropical thorn forest. At possibility of as Spotted flycatcher, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, Common Whitethroat and resident birds.

Day 2: Visit Banni Grassland. Possibility of as Spotted Flycatcher, European nightjar, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, Red-tailed shrike, Common Whitethroat, Eurasian cuckoo, European Nightjar and resident birds.

Day 3: Visit Banni Grassland. Possibility of as Spotted Flycatcher, European nightjar, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, Red-tailed shrike, Common Whitethroat, Eurasian cuckoo, European Nightjar and resident birds.

Pench Jungle Safari tour – May 2019

Tour Date: May 24th (Friday) – May 26th (Sunday), 2019

Introduction

Join us this summer in exploring these amazing forests of Pench. And yes, we do our safaris with only 4 persons in a gypsy for comfortable experience as well as better photographic opportunities.

Pench National park, nestling in the lower southern reaches of the satpuda hills is named after Pench river, meandering through the park from north to south. It is located on the southern boundary of Madhya Pradesh, bordering Maharashtra, in the districts of Seoni and Chhindwara.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Nagpur by 0930 hrs (09:30 AM). After breakfast, transfer to the forest resort in close vicinity of Pench National Park. Post lunch, we shall leave for our 1st jungle safari by 1430 hrs (2:30 PM). On returning back to resort, we shall have an interactive session over dinner followed by overnight stay at the forest resort.

Day 2: Leave early morning at around 0530 hrs (5:30 AM) for jungle safari with packed breakfast. Return back to the resort by 1100 hrs (11:00 AM) for some rest followed by lunch. Post lunch, leave for evening jungle safari by 1430 hrs (02:30 PM). On returning back to resort, we shall have an interactive session over dinner followed by overnight stay at the forest resort.

Day 3: Leave early morning at around 0530 hrs (5:30 AM) for jungle safari with packed breakfast. Return to resort by 1100 hrs (11:00 PM) followed by some relaxation. Post lunch, proceed to  Nagpur.

Birding at Little Rann of Kutch

Introduction

Little Rann of Kutch is famous as the world’s last refuge of the Indian Wild Ass (Khur) for the conservation of which it has been declared as the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary. Though a bleak landscape it is rich in biodiversity and is an ecologically important area for wildlife and many local and migratory water birds like cranes, ducks, pelicans, flamingos and land birds like sandgrouse, francolins and the Indian bustards. It is also home to various unique mammals apart from wild Ass such the Indian Wolf (Canis indica), Desert Fox (Vulpes vulpes pusilla) and Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus).

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Ahmedabad by 05:50 hrs. Meeting with our assist at station and proceed to LRK. Will have breakfast on the way to LRK. Get fresh at LRK hotel, after lunch will have brief introductory session. Brief discussion about what may be expected during the coming excursions. Later will proceed to our first safari in the rann of kutch. After safari, return to resort. Will have interactive session. Dinner and night stay at resort.

Day 2: Morning and evening safari in the rann of kutch. We will start early morning safari into the Rann of Kutch, looking for all usual targets. After hopefully a productive session, we return to resort and Lunch. After lunch will start our evening safari. Upon our return we will have refreshment tea/coffee. We meet for another interactive session before dinner.

Day 3: Morning safari in the rann of kutch followed by lunch at the resort. Have some rest post lunch and proceed to Ahmedabad to board flight / train.

Introduction

The Great Rann of Kutch also called Greater Rann of Kutch or just Rann of is a seasonal salt marshlocated in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India The Great Rann of Kutch, along with the Little Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands on its southern edge, is situated in the district of Kutch and comprises some 30,000 square kilometers between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. The marsh can be accessed from the village of Kharaghoda in Surendranagar District. The Great Rann of Kutch is one of the hottest areas of India. The plant life of the marsh consists of grasses such as Apluda and Cenchrus species along with dry thorny shrubs. The Rann of Kutch is the only place in India where flamingoes come to breed. There are 13 species of lark in the Rann of Kutch. The marshes are also a resting site for migratory birds, and are home to over 200 species of bird including the threatened Lesser Florican and Houbara Bustard.

Late September and early October is the time one can find passage migrants.

Itinerary

Day 1: Birding at tropical thorn forest near my place. At possibility of as spotted flycatcher,  Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, common whitethroat and resident birds.

Day 2: Visit fot mahadev with pack breakfast. give lunch at kunj homestay. After lunch we go at laiyari . At possibility of as spotted flycatcher, European nightjar,  Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, common whitethroat, Eurasian cuckoo, European roller and resident birds. 

Day 3: Visit lodai  with pack breakfast. give lunch at kunj homestay. After lunch we go at chari-lack. At possibility of as spotted flycatcher, European nightjar,  Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, red tail shrike, common whitethroat, Eurasian cuckoo, European nightjar and resident birds. 

Day 4: Visit piyoni mahadev with pack breakfast. give lunch at kunj homestay. At possibility of as spotted flycatcher, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, common whitethroat, Eurasian cuckoo, European nightjar and resident birds.

Birding at Bhigwan

Introduction

It gives us an immense pleasure to announce our second birding tour to Bhigwan. Bhigwan is a catchment area of Ujani Dam, about 95 km from Pune on the Pune-Solapur highway. The water catchment area is spread across around the town of Bhigwan and is well-known for migratory birds.

Itinerary

Day 1: Start from Mumbai on 17th February late night (2300 hrs) and arrive at Bhigwan around 0500 hrs. Pune folks will start by 0400 hours on 18th February early morning and reach Bhigwan by 0630 hrs.

Start with boat ride at around 0700 hrs. We do an extended boat ride till 1130 hrs with packed breakfast. Come back and rest for a while followed by lunch. Second boat ride will start by 1500 hrs all the way till the sunset.

Return to hotel and after a quick tea, leave for a night trail to explore for nightjars and owls by 1930 hrs.

Back to hotel by 2130 hrs, dinner and overnight stay at hotel.

Day 2: Start with boat ride at around 0700 hrs. We do an extended boat ride till 1130 hrs with packed breakfast. Come back and start return journey with lunch en-route.

** If time permits and based on flexibility of all members, we may explore grasslands around Bhigwan or explore some lakes along the highway during the return journey **

Weekend bird-watching tour to Akshi

Introduction

Akshi is a small village, around 2 hrs drive from Mumbai that has a calm beach which is visited by less number of people and a very high number of shore birds. Some of the species which we have encountered in past couple of years include the Ruddy Turnstone, Greater & Lesser Sandplovers, Great Knots, Bar-tailed Godwit, Brahminy Kite, Terek & Curlew Sandpipers, Dunlins along with a variety of Gulls & Terns.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Akshi by 0630hrs & proceed for early morning bird-watching session till 1030 hrs. Return back to have breakfast & check-in to the hotel. Have lunch, share wildlife experiences and relax till 1530 hrs. Proceed for evening bird-watching session at 1600 hrs which will go on till sunset. Return back for dinner. Overnight at hotel at Akshi.

Day 2: Proceed for early morning bird-watching session from 0645 hrs to 1030 hrs. Return for breakfast followed by another quick bird-watching session till noon. Have lunch at 1300 hrs and check out to begin our return journey – filled with lots of images, fun and memories.

Birding at Tal Chappar and Bikaner

Introduction

Tal Chhapar Sanctuary is a sanctuary located in the Churu district of Northwestern Rajasthan in the Shekhawati region of India. It is known for blackbucks and is also home to a variety of birds. Bikaner carcase dump at jor beed. A fantastic place to spot vultures, Eagles, Yellow-eyed Pigeon and many other birds.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Jaipur by 8:00 am and proceed to Tal Chappar. We shall have breakfast on way followed by check-in at hotel in Sujangarh. Post lunch we will have our 1st Bird-watching session in the Tal Chappar Sanctuary in afternoon /evening. Interactive session over dinner followed by overnight stay at hotel in Sujangarh.

Day 2: We will start the day early by 6:30 am with bird-watching at Tal Chappar. Post lunch we shall do the bird-watching in nearby areas – Saltpans and scrubland. Interactive session over dinner and overnight stay at Sujangarh.

Day 3: Start early by 5:30 am and proceed to Bikaner city (160 Kms). Breakfast on the way. Visit to Bikaner carcass dump yard for raptors and vultures. Post lunch, we shall do bird-watching in nearby areas. Return back to the hotel at Sujangarh for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Early morning check-out and proceed to Tal Chappar for our final bird-watching session at the sanctuary and nearby areas. Post lunch, leave for Jaipur.

About Bandhavgarh

Once the private hunting grounds of the rulers of the princely state of Rewa, Bandhavgarh was declared a National Park in 1968 and a Tiger Reserve in 1993 under the Project Tiger initiative.

Nestled within the Vindhya Mountain Range of Central India, the park derives its name from the highest hillock in the area, Bandhavgarh Hill (807 metres), atop which the ancient fort of the same name is located.

The park has a total area of 437 sq. Kms, comprising a core area of 105 sq. Kms (called the Tala Range) and a buffer zone of 332 sq. Kms. Currently only two zones within the national park – the Tala Range and the Magdhi Range – are open to tourists.

About Bharatpur

Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India is a famous avifauna sanctuary that hosts thousands of birds, especially during the winter season. Over 230 species of birds are known to be resident. It is also a major tourist center with scores of ornithologists arriving here in the hibernal season. It was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971. It is also a World Heritage Site.

Birding at Mishmi Hills, Arunachal Pradesh

About Mishmi Hills

Mishmi Hills are on the Northeastern tip of India, in central Arunachal Pradesh and are a southward extension of the Great Himalayan ranges and its northern and eastern parts touch China. These hills are divided into 2 sections – the flood plains of tributaries of Brahmaputra river and the Arunachal Himalayas consisting of snow-capped mountains, lower Himalayan ranges and Shivalik ranges. This hilly area falls in the Dibang valley and is characterised by steeply sloping landform, sub-tropical evergreen forest and high rainfall.

With around 6000 species plant species, 100 mammals and over 600 bird species, Mishmi is a heaven for nature lovers. Some of the highlight bird species at Mishmi consist Sclater’s monal, Blyth’s Tragopan, Temminck’s Tragopan, chestnut-breasted partridge, Ward’s trogon, Red-headed Trogon Dark-sided thrush, Green Cochua, Purple Cochoa, Rusty-bellied and Gould’s shortwing, Beautiful Nuthatch, Mishmi Wren-babbler, Chevron-breasted Babbler Fire-tailed myzornis, 3-4 parrotbill species, Grey-headed bullfinch and so on.
