Birding at Greater Rann of Kutch – Passage Migrants – September 2019

Introduction

The Great Rann of Kutch – one of the top birding sites in India is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat. With the Little Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands on its southern edge, it is situated in the district of Kutch spanning around 30,000 square kilometers between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River.

Along with over 200 species of resident birds, the Great Rann of Kutch is an important stopover for migratory birds which makes it one of the top birding sites in India. Some of key species seen here are Marshall’s Iora, Grey Hypocolius, Spotted flycatcher, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Shrikes, White-naped Tit, Stoliczka’s Bushchat, Sykes’s Nightjar, Tawny Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard, Laggar Falcon, White-bellied Minivet, Short-eared Owl, Indian Eagle Owl, Greater Hoopoe Lark, Merlin, MacQueen’s Bustards, Great Indian Bustards, Common Cranes, Chestnut-bellied & Painted Sandgrouse, Pelicans, and of-course the majestic Flamingos.

Join us in exploring these marshes, grasslands and semi-deserted areas buzzing with a variety of avian species, especially targeting the passage migrants along with the key resident species.

Itinerary

Day 1: Birding at tropical thorn forest. At possibility of as Spotted flycatcher, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, Common Whitethroat and resident birds.

Day 2: Visit Banni Grassland. Possibility of as Spotted Flycatcher, European nightjar, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, Red-tailed shrike, Common Whitethroat, Eurasian cuckoo, European Nightjar and resident birds.

Day 3: Visit Banni Grassland. Possibility of as Spotted Flycatcher, European nightjar, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, Red-tailed shrike, Common Whitethroat, Eurasian cuckoo, European Nightjar and resident birds.

Day 4: Birding at tropical thorn forest. At possibility of as Spotted flycatcher, Rufous-tailed scrub Robin, Red-backed Shrike, Common Whitethroat and resident birds.
